History

Cullera was born thousands of years ago, proof of this are the prehistoric remains of settlements found in different areas of the geography of Cullera, both near the coast and in the sheltered part of the mountain.

Later throughout the years there was always a population nucleus. Come to the time of Muslim occupation is when it was given the name colla aeria, meaning high summit and later It would be called Cullera. From that time there are still the demarcations of the old neighborhoods at the foot of the mountains and the arable fortress that would later be transformed into the Cullera castle, a fort to protect the city and later into the sanctuary and museum that it is today.

After the Muslim occupation came the reconquest, carried out by Aragon and which was led by the conqueror Jaime I, thus extending the limits of the crown.

Life passed normally in the city until the event that marked a before and after. And this was the looting of the city by the famous corsair Dragut, who caused a great commotion in the city, leaving a very small and always fearful population against possible new attacks.

It was not until modernity was reached that Cullera was recovering its population and stability to begin a new progress that would be interrupted by the unstable years of the early twentieth century that would lead to civil war.

Once the civil war ended, agriculture and fishing were the important focuses in the local economy and development that, by the 70s, gave way to the urban development that would create the tourism industry for which Cullera is known today.

All these passages through history have shaped the spirit of the city, also leaving in its path monuments, enclaves, buildings, objects ... that today can be visited through museums, buildings, and places.
